I regularly present at conferences and give presentations as part of my academic career and passion for research on food and language.
“(A)typical Narratives of Instagram Recipe Reels,” 18th International Pragmatics Conference, Brussels, Belgium. 11 July 2023.
During summer 2023, I presented at the 18th International Pragmatics Conference at Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), Brussels, Belgium. International Pragmatics Association (IPrA) hosts every two years a major conference that gathers linguists who specialize in pragmatics from around the world. It is always a fantastic conference with hundreds of panels to choose from during the week-long event. At Brussels, there were over 1500 participants!
With Kelsi, I gave a talk on “(A)Typical Narrative of Instagram Recipe Reels” as part of a panel on (a)typical narrative hosted by Prof Neal Norrick, one of our mentors.
We also presented a poster, “A Discourse Analysis of the Media and Public Awareness, Understanding, and Perceptions of Novel Foods in Singapore,” in collaboration with my research students from Nanyang Technology University: Vincent Li Wong, Ong Ye Xun, Adrian, and Tay Zi Heng.
“Mediated Discourse of Future Foods in Singapore,” Bayreuth Food and Language Lecture Series, BaFoLa. 24 June 2022.
We also like to attend and participate in the monthly linguistics research sharing held by Dr. Sofia Rudiger.
“South Africa’s Culinary History Through Cooking, Consumption and Language,” Culinary Historians of New York
June 9, 2022
Thanks to a grant by the Culinary Historians of New York, my sister and I conducted research on South Africa’s culinary history. We presented our findings, focusing on malva pudding, Cape Malay curry, cinnamon, wine, and biltong.
3rd International Conference on English Across the Curriculum, EAC2021
This conference was focused on pedagogy, specifically the teaching of English across the curriculum. I shared about my work in creating NTU’s first student journal of undergraduate research, Pioneer Road: Journal of Undergraduate Research, and how a student journal encourages students to write for a broader audience, ultimately seeing writing as a tool for developing and sharing their ideas.
